Investigations into the National Service and SkyTrain scandals are anticipated to be completed by mid-April, according to Attorney-General and Justice Minister Dr. Dominic Ayine, opening the door for prosecution.
Dr. Ayine disclosed during a news conference in Accra that eight suspects in the National Service fraud have been questioned, some of whom are already assisting investigators.
There is evidence that top executives’ accounts were credited with money from personnel and merchants.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and others are also accused of paying a Ghanaian Member of Parliament to bury the matter and publicly defend them.
Dr. Ayine stated that $2 million was paid in the SkyTrain scandal at the request of Mr. Solomon Asamoah, the CEO, and Prof. Ameyaw Ekumfi, the Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund’s (GIIF) Board of Directors.
But Mr. Asamoah is currently hiding in Senegal and has said he will return to Ghana in three months, despite his refusal to do so.
Dr. Ayine emphasized that Asamoah will face an absentia trial if he does not return.
In the meantime, Prof. Ekumfi, who worked with Asamoah to enable the financial transfer, is still in Ghana and will be charged.
The Attorney General restated the government’s resolve to combat corruption and guarantee accountability in public institutions.
