Girona moved to the top of the table with a historic victory at Barcelona, highlighting their La Liga title credentials.

Artem Dovbyk, Valery Fernandez, Miguel Gutierrez, and Cristhian Stuani all scored goals to give the visitors their well-earned first-ever league victory over their Catalan rivals.

Ilkay Gundogan’s late goal and Robert Lewandowski’s header were merely consolation prizes for Barcelona.

Girona now leads Real Madrid by two points as a result of the outcome.

Additionally, Michel’s team has a seven-point lead over Atletico Madrid in third place and Barca in fourth.

Although many were taken aback by Girona’s ascent to the top, their demonstrated perseverance suggests they have what it takes to stick with it.

In the 12th minute, Dovbyk, a forward for Ukraine, scored his eighth goal of the season after his international teammate Viktor Tsyhankov skillfully set him up by beating the home team’s offside trap and escaping through the right channel.

And even though Xavi’s team equalized seven minutes later when Lewandowski headed in a rebound from Raphinha’s corner, the visitors were always a serious threat on the counterattack.

Spain Five minutes before halftime, their lead was restored by Under-21 left-back Gutierrez, who broke free and finished with a left foot into the left corner.

Stuani’s flick-on appeared to have finished the scoring for Fernandez in the 80th minute after he had dribbled past Barca defender Jules Kounde.

In added time, German midfielder Gundogan gave rise to brief hopes of a home comeback, but Stuani swiftly put an end to them.

The Uruguayan forward completed a memorable evening for Girona, who are only in their fourth season in La Liga and have never finished higher than 10th, when he tapped in the club’s fourth goal at the back post.
