Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, has come under fire from the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) for firing the Tamale Teaching Hospital’s (TTH) chief executive officer and engaging in a furious altercation with the head of the hospital’s accident and emergency department.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA), the mother organization for the medical profession, responded to the incident that has garnered public notice by calling the minister’s actions a “abuse of power.”

The GMA noted that the manner in which the dismissal was carried out was offensive, adding that it did not follow to the correct procedures needed by law.

“The GMA strongly condemns the unfortunate treatment of the doctors at the Emergency unit of the Hospital during the visit by the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North and subsequent dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Hospital.

“The manner in which the dismissal was carried out is an affront to due process and abuse of power by the Hon. Minister of Health. The GMA stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the wake of these injustices being perpetuated,” A communiqué dated Wednesday, April 23, 2025, provided this information.

The statement, which was signed by GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour and General Secretary Dr. Richard Selormey, also denounced the minister’s public questioning of a patient’s death.

The GMA emphasized that since they feel the minister’s acts breached patient confidentiality, the health facility may be subject to legal risks.

“The ill-informed media audit of the death of the patient raises serious issues of breach of patient confidentiality, exposes the facility to medico-legal risks and prejudges the issue even before the matter is duly investigated. Indeed, the doctors have already been tried in the court of public opinion,” a part of the statement read.

Therefore, the association is requesting that the minister issue a clear apology to the medical facility’s employees.

In order to determine the actual circumstances underlying the patient’s death and to resolve the grievances of the grieving family, they also encouraged the hospital to make sure that the proper procedures are followed.

“The Ghana Medical Association therefore demands an unqualified apology from the Minister of Health and the Member of Parliament for Tamale North for the unwarranted attack on the staff involved,” the statement added.
