Mohammed Kassim, the chairman of the Gomoa West constituency for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been taken into custody at the Bakaano police station in Cape Coast.
The chairman was arrested for an unspecified reason, but family sources believe it may have something to do with the recent altercation between NDC and New Patriotic Party members during the District Road Infrastructure Project (DRIP) machinery presentation on Monday, September 16.
According to reports, Mr. Kassim was taken into custody on Wednesday night after being taken from his residence by a few police officers.
When the equipment intended to accelerate the district’s road development was being demonstrated, NDC and NPP supporters got into a violent altercation.
The dispute is alleged to have started when NDC supporters objected to the choice to put posters of NPP parliamentary candidate Bismark Basie Nkum for Gomoa West on official property.
The argument turned violent, and Gomoa West Member of Parliament Richard Gyan-Mensah is reported to have drawn a pistol during the altercation. Additionally, it is said that the machine operator was stabbed in the ear with a knife.
In a press release, Richard Gyan-Mensah refuted the claims, however.
NDC members gathered at the police station and demanded that the chairman be freed.
