The Finance Ministry’s visit to the victims of the Akosombo and Kpong Dam spills in Mepe, the Volta Region, was deemed “revealing” and “sobering” by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
Mr. Ofori-Atta stated that the families displaced and impacted by the leakage are sympathized with by his Ministry.
On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, the Finance Minister disclosed in Parliament that the government had allotted GHS220 million as relief to aid the spillage victims.
“Government has budgeted an amount of 220 million to support the relief base for the communities affected by the Akosombo spillage as well as floods upstream in the Oti, Savannah and Bono East Regions” the Finance Minister said.
Also, “for the restoration phase, Government through the Ministry of Agriculture will allocate additional resources to support the restoration of livelihoods.”
The following information was revealed by Mr. Ofori-Atta: “We have requested funding from the World Bank under the IDA Crisis Response Window (CRW) to support the victims’ resettlement, livelihood restoration, compensation, and infrastructure reconstruction in the affected communities.”
The Finance Minister said that the Ministry of Finance has submitted an application to the “Global Shield Against Climate Risk Fund” in order to assist in addressing the long-term effects of climate change on those who are affected by drought, flooding, and other unfavorable weather occurrences.
This he stressed is an” initiative launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Chancellor Olaf Scholz during the COP 27 in Sham ElSheikh, to access some financial resources to support communities upstream and downstream of the Akosombo Dam.”
The entire government, non-governmental organizations, organizations, and people who have “empathised with, and supported the affected families” of the disastrous spillage have received gratitude from President Akufo-Addo, according to Mr. Ofori-Atta.
