Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, declared that the ministry has authorized the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to global internet figure Darren Watkins Jr also known as IShowSpeed, after verifying what he referred to as the streamer’s “irrefutable ties” to Ghana.
In a post on his social media handles, Mr. Ablakwa mentioned renowned Ghanaian YouTuber and cultural champion Wode Maya, attributing the decision to conversations with him and the following verification steps
“Following our discussions and subsequent confirmation of the irrefutable ties of IShowSpeed to Ghana, I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian Passport to IShowSpeed,” the minister stated.
The foreign minister praised both individuals as deserving representatives of the country and the continent and urged Wode Maya to keep promoting Ghana and Africa favorably on the international scene.
“Keep making our great nation Ghana, and our beloved African continent proud,” he said.
Mr. Ablakwa went on to say that Ghana honors Wode Maya, pointing out that the government gave him a diplomatic passport last year in appreciation of his efforts to improve Ghana’s reputation abroad.
“Ghana celebrates you both — you remain our worthy ambassadors, and we are ever so delighted to have granted you a diplomatic passport last year,” he added.
“For God, Country & Continent” was the proclamation’s final patriotic remark, highlighting Ghana’s larger Pan-African perspective.
The announcement has sparked a lot of public interest, especially in light of IShowSpeed’s recent trip to Ghana, when he took part in cultural events and livestreamed his experiences to millions of viewers worldwide, enhancing Ghana’s allure as a destination for tourism.
The digital celebrity, who disclosed that his mother is of Ghanaian heritage, was given the traditional name Barima Kofi Akuffo, which honors his birthday and his legendary bravery.
