Government declares Good Friday, Easter Monday as public holidays

The days of Friday, April 7, and Monday, April 10, have been designated as holidays.

The two Christian feast days honor, respectively, Good Friday and Easter Monday.

“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, 7th April, 2023, and Monday, 10th April 2023, which mark Good Friday and Easter Monday respectively, are statutory public holidays and should be observed as such throughout the country,” in a statement signed by the Interior Minister Ambrose Dery stated.

Easter Sunday marks Jesus’s resurrection. After Jesus was crucified on the Friday his body was taken down from the cross and buried in a cave tomb.

Easter Monday marks the conclusion of the holy week festivities before the start of the regular workweek. The second day of the Octave in Eastern Christianity and the second day of Eastertide in Western Christianity are observed as official holidays in various nations throughout the world.
