Government declares Wednesday as ‘Fugu Day’

The government has unveiled a new cultural program urging all Ghanaians and friends of Ghana both locally and internationally to wear Fugu, also referred to as Batakari, every Wednesday.

The declaration was issued in a statement endorsed by the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie (MP), representing the government.

The initiative is stated to be part of efforts aimed at safeguarding and advancing Ghana’s cultural heritage.

The declaration also promoted donning the outfit “in all its various styles, designs, and expressions, enhanced by its unique and lovely accessories.”

Madam Gomashie stated that the initiative aims to foster national identity and cultural pride. “in all its diverse forms, designs, and expressions, complemented by its distinctive and beautiful accessories.,” she stated.

Aside from its cultural significance, the Minister emphasized that the initiative is anticipated to produce considerable social and economic advantages.

“Beyond its cultural significance, the initiative is expected to generate far-reaching social and economic benefits, including the empowerment of local weavers, designers, artisans, and traders across the value chain, as well as expanded business, employment, and commercial opportunities nationwide,” the statement said.

The government also expressed optimism about the broader national impact of the initiative.

“The government hopes that this collective embrace of Fugu will strengthen national unity, stimulate the creative economy, and serve as a powerful symbol of Ghana’s cultural confidence and self-expression,” the Minister stated.
