Although reports of intermittent outages, known as dumsor, have been made in some regions of the country, the government has reassured the people that it has secured sufficient fuel supply to support electricity generation.

While acknowledging the recent power outages, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communications, stressed that steps had been taken to provide a steady and dependable energy supply during a press briefing on Thursday, February 20.

Energy Minister John Jinapor is keeping a close eye on the situation, he added, and will interact with the public in the days ahead to answer any questions and provide updates on the outages.

“I can say that the energy minister is aware of the situation and in the coming days he will engage the public. But the threats that we faced at the very onset of this government, which is related to the closure of the West Africa Gas Pipeline and the failure of the previous government to meet its obligation in providing fuel for thermal power generation were averted.

“The government has brought an adequate supply of fuel. But it is important from time to time to engage the public and address the concerns that they may have when it comes to the power situation,” he stated.

The weak state of the sector that the government inherited is the reason for the nation’s current energy problems, according to Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor.

On Thursday, February 20, while appearing on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program, he reassured Ghanaians that the administration is making every effort to address the problems.

Mr. Jinapor claims that the energy sector’s long-standing structural issues are the cause of the inconsistent power supply that is being felt throughout the nation.

He asked the populace to have patience as the administration stabilizes the situation by putting long-term measures into place.

“We inherited a very weak energy sector. Ghanaians should be patient with us while we attempt to resolve the issues once and for all.

“The current erratic supply situation should be stable in two weeks’ time,” Jinapor said.
