Kennedy Agyapong, a candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position, claims that the failure of the campaign against galamsey illegal small-scale mining is attributable to the conflicted interests of those in positions of authority who ought to be overseeing and controlling it.

He drew attention to the fact that some ministers had participated in galamsey activities, depriving certain regions particularly the Western region, where gold is mined of growth.

He pledged that if given the chance, he would endeavor to make sure that mining profits go through the proper channels and aid in the growth of the region.

What evidence is there that humans mine gold in the West? with poor infrastructure, little growth, and nothing to display. If given the chance, I will control mining to make sure that the money goes via the proper channels, he declared.

We get oil from corn and flour, but what are we doing as a nation, he continued? However, despite all of these, there are individuals in the nation who falsely identify as ministers but, once in power, engage in nothing but galamsey.

Agyapong cautioned that if he released the proof he had regarding ministries and specific individuals participating in galamsey activities, there would likely be mayhem.

“I didn’t come here because of that (galamsey issues) but if you want evidence, I will be able to provide an abundance for you, if I am to provide evidence, everyone will hide in their rooms,” Mr Agyapong stated.

Kennedy will run against Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh for the position of NPP flagbearer.

The NPP has set November 4, 2023, as the date to choose a new party leader to succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
