The three victims of the notorious shooting incident at Ejura in the Ashanti Region received a total of Gh1,218,897 from the Ghanaian government.
Awal Mesbawu, 17, received Gh 678 519, Louis Ayikpa, 22, received Gh 347 953 and Nazif Nuhu, 31, received Gh 192 425 for each of the three victims.
At a brief ceremony conducted at Ejura Palace on February 15, 2023, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Interior, Madam Adelaide Annor-Kumi, spoke on behalf of her employer, Hon. Ambrose Dery, and stated that the three victims had received compensation in line with the extent of the harm done to them.
“We are very grateful to the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his vice Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, the Ejurahene Barima Osei Hwedie II, the National Chief Imam and families of the victims for their contributions in ensuring that Ejura is living in absolute peace now”.
“Government had to take time to dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure the victims were duely compensated, as part of the process, doctors met the injured victims to understand the extent of their injuries before finally handing over the checks to them”.
“You all saw from the presentation that, Mr Mesbawu received the highest amount, this is because he lost one of his legs after the incident and he was the one to have suffered the most in the shooting incident”.
Barima Osei Hwedie II, the head of the Ejura Traditional Area, welcomed the team from the government and praised it for its prompt action.
He praised Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, vice president of republic of Ghana, for giving the welfare of Ejura first priority.
After a shooting that resulted in the deaths of two individuals, Barimah Osei Hwedie II, the Head of Protocol at the Office of the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, praised the government for the amazing outpouring of support, aid, generosity, and sacrifice shown to the people of Ejura.
“We the people of Ejura will continue to have faith in the leadership of this government because they have indeed proven to be trustworthy”.
Background
On Monday, June 28, 2021, several young people in Ejura gathered to the streets to protest over an alleged mob attack that killed Ibrahim Mohamed Kaaka, a local social media activist.
According to reports, the military personnel who were stationed to maintain security opened fire into a gathering of protesters, leaving two people dead and four more wounded.
Tragically, Mutalar Mohammed and Abdul Nasiru Usif perished during the demonstration.
A three-person commission of investigation was formed by the interior minister to look into the underlying problems after the brawl.
On July 16, 2021, the committee led by Appeals Court judge Justice George Kingsley Koomson came to a conclusion after interviewing 22 witnesses and reviewing 555 digital photos, 117 videos, eight documents, two written declarations, and two pieces of physical evidence.
Ambrose Dery, the interior minister, received the committee’s recommendations on Tuesday, July 27, 2021.
