As part of efforts to put an end to the ongoing strike, the government and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) have achieved an agreement about the conditions of service for its members.
Following the government’s instruction to freeze its members’ pay for July, CETAG ceased to provide any services.
On July 22, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department received instructions from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to suspend the pay of all striking members of the College Educators and Governors Group (CETAG) until July 2024.
In reaction to this decision, CETAG said in a statement on Tuesday, July 23, that it is discontinuing all of its offerings in accordance with the Minister of Education’s instruction.
Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, did, however, reassure reporters in a Friday, August 2, media interview that the discussions have been finalized.
“We have concluded the discussions with them. We have actually negotiated and signed on to it. I have signed my portion and all my colleagues who are supposed to sign have signed. In their case, their leadership have also signed. So what is needed is for them to have their national council meeting and also take a decision.
“I must admit that we still have work in progress. The most important issue, even though there were quite a number of issues, was the issue of migration and I am appealing to them to actually hasten their move to be able to meet.”
