The Cabinet has approved the immediate payment of salary to 6,500 nurses and midwives who have been working unpaid since their recruitment, according to Ministry of Health Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

The present government took office in January 2025 with a backlog of over 13,500 nurses and midwives who had been placed without financial clearance, the Minister told reporters during a press conference in Accra.

According to Mr. Akandoh, the salaries of 7,000 of these medical professionals have already been processed and paid, and the remaining 6,500 will start receiving payments in November 2025 when the Cabinet has approved the release of funds.

He also disclosed that the Ministry of Health, working with the Ministry of Finance, has taken action to regularize the employment of more than 17,000 rotating health workers, 800 medical doctors, and 883 junior doctors who were previously employed without formal clearance.

He pointed out that this action is a part of the government’s larger plan to boost healthcare worker motivation across the country and fortify Ghana’s healthcare workforce.
