In order to improve public transportation nationwide and strengthen the operations of Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL), the government has announced intentions to purchase 500 additional buses in the short to medium term.
On Thursday, October 30, 2025, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Minister of Transportation, announced the proposal in Parliament, describing it as a component of the government’s larger plan to revitalize public transportation and aid Ghana’s economic reform goal.
The first phase of the rollout is anticipated to begin early next year, with roughly 150 buses arriving, the minister said.
Mr. Nikpe pointed out that Metro Mass Transit has struggled to maintain operations, increase its route network, and satisfy the rising demand for reasonably priced and dependable public transportation due to its existing fleet of only 134 buses.
In response to questions from members of parliament, the minister stated that the new purchase is a component of a larger strategy to update terminal infrastructure, enhance service standards, and increase job prospects in the industry.
“Mr Speaker, I wish to announce to this House that the company is in the process of acquiring new buses—about 500 of them over a short to long term—to augment our operations,” Mr. Nikpe said.
“These buses will be deployed within the country to optimise existing routes and establish new ones in underserved areas” he added.
In order to guarantee that buses are always available and in working order, he also disclosed that Metro Mass Transit is working to operationalize elements of a 24-hour economy, beginning with its traffic unit and vehicle maintenance department.
