According to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, “the President is the government, everyone else is just an advisor.” Kufuor has emphasized the importance of the presidency in the nation’s governance.
In an interview with Ekosii Sen of Asempa FM, Mr. Kufuor made these remarks while talking about the composition of Ghana’s executive presidency and the duties that accompany it.
The statements follow those of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer and current vice president.
Dr. Bawumia recently appealed to Ghanaians to support him in the forthcoming elections, saying that he would be able to carry out policies that would propel the nation’s progress if he were elected president.
He specifically sought power in order to address what he perceived as a lack of development during his time as vice president, where he claimed he was only able to provide counsel and lacked the power to implement change.
Kufuor’s remarks emphasize the idea that the president of Ghana has the last say on matters of policy, while the vice president and other members of the cabinet have advising functions.
He emphasized that although Bawumia may have had good intentions and ideals, his ability to make a difference was constrained by his role as vice president, and that he could only fully realize his vision for the nation as president.
In response to some who have accused Bawumia of being responsible for Ghana’s current economic woes, the former president noted that the vice president’s job has always been primarily to advise the president.
He reaffirmed that the president’s office holds actual authority and that only by gaining that post can one implement significant reforms and programs to better the fortunes of the country.
“I have been President before; In Ghana, the government is the President. Ours is an executive presidency. All other persons in government are only advisors including the Vice President,” Mr Kufour said.
