The government plans to build a museum at the Kumasi International Airport in memory of Nana Agyeman Prempeh, the first Asante king.

As to the government, the museum will showcase historical relics related to the Sagranti War, which resulted in the apprehension and consequent banishment of the thirteenth occupant of the Golden Stool, the highest position in the Asante Kingdom.

When he started a day-long tour of the facility on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, Ashanti Regional Minister Hon. Simon Osei Mensah revealed this.

Speaking to Ghanatodayonline.com reporter Jacob Agyenim Boateng at the sidelines of the tour, Hon Simon Osei Mensah disclosed that, President Akuffo Addo decided to name the airport after the Asante monarch due to the King’s historical attachment to the area.

“History has it that, Nana Agyeman Prempeh I before his final exile in 1900 stayed in a brick building which the location is now the airport, other historians has it that although the structure was meant to accommodate the king, he was captured before it’s completion, whatever the case is, we want to the president is renaming the airport to honor him”.

In his last State of the Nation Address to Parliament, President Akufo-Addo announced that Nana Agyeman Prempeh I would be honored by having the airport bear his name.

In response to the decision, a few Kumasi locals expressed their happiness at dedicating a significant state facility to the 13th Asante king.

In March 1888, Nana Agyeman Prempeh I, also known as Nana Kwaku Duah III, was enstooled as an Asantehene. Prempeh I was the new name later on.

After fighting the British in 1900, Nana Agyeman Prempeh I was taken captive and banished.
