The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, made comments on the revenue mobilization strategies used by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), which the Ghana Revenue Authority Workers’ Union has vehemently condemned.

In a meeting with the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Bawumia highlighted concerns over reported cases of tax collection by GRA employees being used as a justification for harassing firms.

In response, Organized Labour released a statement on Friday, March 22, 2024, calling Dr. Bawumia’s words “unfortunate” and believing that they undermined the hard work of GRA personnel.

“We would like to state unequivocally that, we the workers of GRA find this statement unfortunate and consider it as an attack on the efforts of the hard-working staff of the Authority which if not discontinued, would incur the displeasure of workers, disrupt revenue collection efforts and breed industrial disharmony.”

The union issued a warning, claiming that such remarks may incite dissent among the workforce, hinder tax collection, and cause worker unrest.

Moreover, they requested that the Vice President either recognize the noteworthy advancements achieved by GRA or abstain from uttering remarks that disparage their efforts.

It’s odd that the Vice President, who also serves as the team leader for economic management, would say the Authority sets improbable goals for itself when he knows full well that the government, via the Ministry of Finance, sets annual goals for the Authority.

“Indeed, the least we expect from the Vice President, if he would not appreciate the efforts of the Authority in raising Tax Revenue, is not to put the lives of our hardworking staff at risk with such unfortunate comments.”
