A couple of Ashanti Region members of the New Patriotic Party have urged Kennedy Agyapong, the Assin Central Member of Parliament, to turn down a proposal to be the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate.
Members of the volunteer groups that backed Kennedy Ohene Agyapong in the NPP presidential primary claim there was prejudice in favor of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president.
The groups want the Assin Central MP to think about running as an independent in the 2024 presidential election because they believe he is the greatest choice to lead the nation.
The group’s leadership claims that in addition to petitioning Kennedy Agyapong, they would hold a number of meetings until the problems raised in the petition are resolved.
Gabriel Amankwaah, the chairman of the volunteer groups, spoke at a press conference in Kumasi.
“Ken Agaypong, we are here today to urge you never to join them on any campaign platform because you are the only person that the success of this country lies in your hands. And we believe that Insha Allah, you will be the next president of this country. We, the volunteer groups, toured all these regions for you because we bought into your message and ideology as Ghanaians and not only as NPP members.”
The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been elected to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Election 2024 as flagbearer.
It had been predicted Bawumia was going to win with a larger margin but as promised, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong gave him a “showdown”.
Ken Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central came second with 37.41%.
Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto came third with 0.76% while Francis Addai Nimoh was last with 0.41%.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was given a “showdown” by Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, one of the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential contenders, who praised the elections committee of the party for setting up a free and fair presidential primary.
As a result, he has acknowledged his loss and thanked Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who won the competition. He has also promised to support the general elections that would take place in 2024.
“This is the only thing I’ve been preaching, and I must admit this election is fair and my grassroots have spoken; therefore, I accept the results in good faith,” Mr Agyapong said moments after the results was announced.
He pledged his support to the flagbearer-elect to help defeat the NDC and “break the eight.”
“So, party members we should put everything behind us and let’s unite this party…, I believe we can break the eight and that’s what I’ve been preaching,” he added.
