Professor Aaron Mike Ocquaye, the former speaker of parliament, has criticized the minority in parliament for their attempt to have four MP seats declared vacant in advance of the elections scheduled for December 7.

MPs who have chosen to run as independent candidates, which they claim is against constitutional constraints, are the subject of the Minority’s drive.

The Minority claims that the MPs in question Cynthia Morrison of Agona West, Kwadwo Asante of Suhum, and Peter Yaw Kwakye Ackah of Amenfi Central should be removed from Parliament for their decision to run as independents.

Additionally, the Fomena MP, who formerly served as an independent MP but has now chosen to run for office under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag, is being sought out by the Minority.

In response in an interview with Joy FM, Prof. Ocquaye criticized the Minority’s proposal, claiming that they lacked the legal authority to take such action against MPs from the other party.

He questioned the reasoning behind their conduct by making an analogy:

“It’s wrong because the benefit is not his [Haruna Iddrisu’s]; the law doesn’t stand to his inurement. That’s why I talked about the husband and wife. He has no locus because he doesn’t belong to the party involved. Is it you who should say there’s a problem in my house?”

“You say I have a problem with my wife, and I’m saying I have no problem with my wife, what are you talking about?” Prof Ocquaye added.

Former Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu started the petition, and Speaker of the House of Parliament Alban Bagbin has postponed making a decision on it.

Article 97 (1)(g) of the Constitution, which states that an MP must resign their position if they decide to run as an independent or leave the political party they were elected under, is used in the petition.
