“Have you abandoned your view that Akufo-Addo is the mother serpent of corruption? – Asiedu Nketia to Amidu

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the national chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), claims he no longer believes in the values upheld by renowned lawyer and former special prosecutor Martin Amidu.

He claimed that up until Mr. Amidu’s recent appeal to President Akufo-Addo asking to remove Kissi Agyebeng from her position as Special Prosecutor, he thought Mr. Amidu was a highly moral man.

“The Martin Amidu I know, until this thing was done, I trusted that he was a very principled person,” he stated in an interview with JoyNews AM Show on May 23.My faith in his being principled is badly shaken.”

This statement is in response to a petition that former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu addressed to the president on April 30, 2024. The appeal was then passed to Justice Gertrude Torkonoo on May 6, 2024.

Mr. Amidu made accusations of abuses involving judges and the administration of justice, as well as procurement violations in the purchase of cars for the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Additional accusations included the wrongful appointment of employees to the office, the arrest and imprisonment of residents, and infringement of their right to information.

The National Chairman of the NDC states that he is still unsure of Mr. Amidu’s motivation for filing the case.

He finds it surprising that the one he would approach to address alleged corrupt conduct is the same one who the former Special Prosecutor had referred to as the “Mother serpent of corruption”.

According to the NDC Chairman, Mr. Amidu’s choice to petition the President has damaged his reputation and derailed his earlier attempts to combat corruption.

“He shouldn’t have done that at all. I am still trying to understand why. Comrade Martin, have you abandoned your view that Nana Akufo-Addo is the mother serpent of corruption? Or you still hold that view? If you still hold that view, when you came to a roadblock that I want to do this thing against finance minister and the president said no way, you resigned and came to open up.

“If your successor has come to a similar road block and the president is demanding his resignation, won’t you show solidarity? But you are rather making yourself the tool for the president to be able to achieve his objective of fighting those who are fighting corruption.”

Mr. Asiedu Nketia declared that until the ongoing investigations are finished and further information is made public, he cannot endorse Amidu or the Special Prosecutor.
