GH¢200,000 has been paid by two national officers of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to the refurbishment of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B), the National Organizer, and Justin Kodua Frimpong (JFK), the General Secretary, are the two.
On November 17, 2023, a Friday, the donation was made.
Mr. Kodua Frimpong emphasized how crucial it is to avoid politicizing the campaign to raise money for the hospital’s renovation.
Mr. Frimpong emphasized that regardless of party allegiance, a cooperative effort is needed to give the tertiary hospital a thorough makeover given its declining situation.
In addition, the two will act as fundraisers for the facility’s renovation.
Serving more than ten regions in Ghana, KATH is vital, but due to outdated equipment, providing healthcare is severely hampered at the moment.
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II launched a campaign to raise GH¢10 million for the hospital’s renovations in order to address these issues. In keeping with this, the NPP General Secretary and National Organizer gave GH¢200,000 to the cause. He appealed to businesses and other groups to support this important endeavor.
“This should be devoid of politics, we have to ensure the chal¬lenges are addressed. The facility will outlive all governments so we should do well to support this initiative,” the Asantehene spoke in Twi, at the launch, on Friday.
Mr. Frimpong Kodua highlighted that health challenges are nonpartisan, saying “The New Patriotic Party as a whole will also come and make our official contribution for this project, and the president will also come and support. At this point, we don’t need to be partisan because health does not matter whether you are NDC or NPP, and so we are calling on our brothers from the NDC and the other parties to support the project.”
KATH’s Chief Executive Officer, Professor Dr Otchere Addai-Mensah, thanked everyone for the donation and encouraged more teamwork to tackle the hospital’s problems.
He made a point of highlighting the necessity of extra equipment, especially for crucial situations like dialysis machines.
“This sad state of affairs is get¬ting worse by the day and we are reaching a point where if nothing was done immediately, the old GEE blocks could soon suffer a catastrophic structural failure with dire consequences for health care services in this region and beyond,” he emphasized.
“everything has deteriorated beyond maintenance due to the fact that the facility has never undergone any comprehensive renovation in its close to 70 years history due to the nation’s limited resources” he added.
He called on all and sundry to support the Asantehene “to bring this vision into reality through our generous contributions to the fund-raising drive”.
Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the KATH, noted that numerous leaks, loose and falling plumbing pipes, hanging cables, and peeling floors have made a major renovation necessary to ensure the comfort of both patients and hospital staff.
According to him, the hospital serves all 16 regions as well as other West African nations, making it the only referral center in the country’s central and northern areas.
According to Prof. Addai-Mensah, there have been sporadic repairs, but not enough to address the deterioration the blocks have experienced over the past 70 years.
