The black box from the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter that crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District on Wednesday, August 6, killing a number of senior military and government personnel, has been recovered, according to Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene.

A team of investigators has successfully identified the black box at the accident site, a critical step in determining the reason of the unfortunate tragedy, according to a Facebook post made by Dr. Amoakohene on Thursday, August 7.

The crew started the mission earlier Thursday morning and was composed of officers from various military forces, including the Ghana Air Force.

Residents and the Assembly Member for the town joined them, and he led them through a forest to the crash site.

The Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad, and the Minister for Defense, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, were killed in the crash, which was dubbed one of the most catastrophic aviation disasters in recent Ghanaian history.

The crash also claimed the lives of Samuel Sarpong, the vice chairman of the NDC; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Muniru Mohammed, the acting deputy national security coordinator. Additionally killed were the three crew members: Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala.

According to early accounts, the helicopter slipped off radar while traveling to Obuasi, which prompted military and local officials to launch a quick response and search.

It is anticipated that the discovery of the black box would give investigators vital information as they race to piece together the sequence of events that led to the deadly disaster.

In the meantime, samples of the eight deceased people’s remains have been transported to South Africa for DNA testing in order to help identify them.
