As the nation wraps up three days of national mourning for the eight people killed in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region, President John Dramani Mahama has asked Ghanaians to use their sorrow to fuel a newfound dedication to nation-building.

On Saturday, August 9, the President urged people to “move from grieving to accepting our loss” during a memorial ceremony and reflection session. He emphasized that the best way to honor the lost is to carry on their mission of creating a united and prosperous Ghana moving forward.

“Let us commit ourselves to working tirelessly, transcending our differences, and focusing our energies on the monumental task of national development.

“They served Ghana with their last breath, and it is our sacred duty to continue that service to the Ghana they envisioned, a Ghana of opportunity, justice, and prosperity for all,” he said.

Defense Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong were all killed in the August 6 crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District.

When the Z-9 helicopter they were riding in went off radar on the way to Obuasi, three members of the Ghana Armed Forces also lost their lives: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Following a DNA study in South Africa, the bodies of the victims were positively identified, and two of them—Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad and Muniru Mohammed—are set to be buried on Sunday, August 10.

As the country struggles with the unexpected deaths of these prominent politicians and military people, President Mahama makes the plea, highlighting the need for togetherness and fortitude in the wake of their sacrifice.
