The People’s National Convention (PNC) flagbearer, Bernard Mornah, filed an application to the High Court to reverse the Electoral Commission’s decision to disqualify him from running in the forthcoming presidential election, but the court dismissed it.
In a ruling delivered today morning, Justice Richard Apietu stated that the claims made by Bernard Mornah, a presidential aspirant on the ticket of the People’s National Convention (PNC), were unfounded.
Justice Apietu emphasized that once the EC had notified Mornah of the anomalies, he should have taken greater care to address the errors when given the opportunity.
“The court ought not to grant the application for judicial review. The application is refused and accordingly dismissed,” Justice Apietu said.
The decision essentially prevents Mr. Mornah from exploring other legal options to fight his disqualification, posing new difficulties for the PNC as the December elections approach.
The goal of Mr. Mornah’s plea was to overturn the Electoral Commission’s ruling, which disqualified him due to problems with his nomination forms.
Discussions over the fairness of the election process and the Electoral Commission’s involvement in candidate vetting have been triggered by his withdrawal from the race.
The PNC is now in a challenging situation with little time to reorganize before the next elections as a result of the court’s ruling.
