In order to give the Attorney General time to finish preparing its witness statements, the Accra High Court has ordered Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former head of the National Signals Bureau, whose bail requirements have not yet been fulfilled, to be held in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for seven working days.

In order to give the court more time to decide, the case has been postponed until May 13.

In order to decide whether or not the first accused individual should remain on the current bail terms, the court decided to review submissions for the grant of bail in camera at the latest court date, which was today.

The attorney general objected to the first accused person’s request that the court extend the current bail conditions for all accused individuals, as presented by the accused’s attorneys. He gave this explanation because he had shown signs of meddling with prosecution witnesses.

The AG’s argument was the reason the court had to order counsel to bring the parties before it in camera so they could present their arguments for and against.

After weighing the arguments made by the Republic’s and the accused’s attorneys, as well as the need to balance the accused’s rights, the judge decided to keep the accused in jail for seven days so the attorney general could finish preparing his witness statements.

Atta Akyea, the accused’s attorney, begged the judge to add weekends to the seven-day period, but the judge clarified that the AG is not in the office on weekends. Srem Sai, the Deputy AG, was likewise against the request.

Later, the court clarified that he intended to grant the seven days since the state requires time, not necessarily seven working days, and one of the possible witnesses is not within the jurisdiction.
