Bail has been granted to Hopeson Adorye, a vociferous member of the Movement for Change who was detained after he admitted to setting off dynamite in the Volta Region before the 2016 elections in order to support the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Dansoman District Court granted Mr. Adorye bail on Thursday, May 23, setting GH¢20,000 with two sureties, one of which had to be justified.
The police accused him of publishing fraudulent information.
In an interview with JoyNews, Nana Ohene Ntow, a prominent figure in the Movement for Change, provided an update.
He claims that Mr. Adorye has been brought to the Ministries Police Station to finish the formalities involved in being released from detention.
“He was put before the Dansoman District Court this [Thursday] morning and was charged with publication of false news. He has been granted bail and has been taken to the Ministries Police Station with our lawyers to secure his release,” Mr Ntow said.
June 26, 2024 is the new date set for the case.
In the meanwhile, the arrest, according to Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a former Adentan member of parliament who left the NPP and joined the Movement for Change, is politically motivated.
After movement leader and presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen paid him a visit, Mr. Buaben Asamoa declared that the accusations made against Hopeson Adorye are untrue and unfair.
“Hopeson Adorye is not about to run away from Ghana or his home because the police intend to charge him with the publication of false information. So to go to the extent of keeping him all day in the police station and bringing him over to the Ministries to detain him, you point fingers backwards at yourself that there is something political at play and it is not fair,” he said.
Hopeson Adorye gained notoriety after confessing to being a part of a scheme to ignite dynamite in the Volta Region in order to intimidate people in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) heartland to support the NPP during an appearance on Accra FM on May 10.
