President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence in Dr. Johnson Asiama’s capacity to run the Bank of Ghana (BoG), despite the opposition New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) concerns regarding the appointment’s legitimacy and suitability.
The president’s backing coincides with a heated debate about Dr. Asiama’s past legal issues and his ability to steer Ghana’s financial sector through its current crisis.
The Minority in Parliament has been vocal in its opposition of Dr. Asiama’s appointment, citing his previous involvement in the failure of UniBank and UT Bank, for which he was on trial before the government dropped all charges.
Dr. Asiama’s legal experience, according to the NPP, disqualifies him from holding the office of Governor of the BoG, which calls for unshakable honesty and dependability.
However, during the swearing-in ceremony of Dr. Johnson Asiama as Governor and Dr. Zakari Mumuni as First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, President Mahama defended Dr. Asiama’s appointment, emphasizing the need for competent and experienced leadership to address the challenges facing Ghana’s financial sector.
“Ghana’s financial sector is in crisis and the task ahead demands experience foresight and decisive leadership. With Dr Asiama heading the Bank of Ghana, I am confident that we will rebuild trust in the institution, we will restore stability, and put our economy back on the path of sustained growth.
“I trust him with this responsibility knowing that he will serve with greater diligence and excellence,” he added.
