There are concerns regarding the impact of the legislation that established the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), according to Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.

He contended that there could be duplication and inefficiencies as a result of the Attorney General and OSP having substantially similar authority.

“As for the law you passed on the establishment of the Special Prosecutor, I did tell you that it was an act in futility. You were not going to achieve anything from that but you went ahead to pass it. I disagreed with you but I was alone,” Bagbin stated on Tuesday, adding “Because I was very clear that, that authority is embedded in the powers of the Attorney General constitutionally.

Bagbin made his remarks in the midst of a discussion concerning the mission and effectiveness of the OSP.

Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, charged on Wednesday, November 29, that the judiciary was showing a lack of respect for his office’s authority by dismissing its cases too quickly.

Speaking at an Accra press conference, Mr. Agyebeng called the trend concerning and detrimental to the fight against corruption.
