Referring to certain minority MPs as “hooligans” during the #OccupyBoG protest in October of last year has been denounced by Dr. Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).

Dr. Addison explained that a foreign media outlet that first covered the story provided the reported description, not him.

A coalition of minority lawmakers, NDC supporters, and other interest groups staged the #OccupyBoG protest in October 2023, calling for Dr. Addison and his deputies to resign over charges of economic mismanagement and counterfeit money printing.

Speaking in an interview with the global business portal Central Banking, Dr. Addison responded by calling the protest spearheaded by the NDC “completely unnecessary.”

On Monday, April 8, 2024, Dr. Ernest Addison appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in Parliament. He vehemently refuted claims that the protesters were hooligans, claiming that the term “hooliganism” was a media outlet’s interpretation rather than a true portrayal of what he had said.

“This is what I am coming to say: those who know me and know my character… you have not heard a single word of a recorded message with me describing parliamentarians in that manner. This was some foreign journalist’s description of the conversation we had, and I disowned it,” Dr Addison said.
