As he stepped down in 2017, President John Mahama reiterated that he had successfully ended Ghana’s “dumsor,” or electricity rationing.
On Thursday, February 27, he gave his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) of his second term. He emphasized that his administration took immediate action to put an end to the ongoing power outages that had been a problem for the nation for years.
“When I was elected in 2012, I promised to solve the legacy problem of dumsor, and I fixed dumsor,” President Mahama asserted.
He emphasized that by January 2016, his government had stabilized the energy industry and ensured a steady supply of electricity through the implementation of efficient regulations and infrastructure upgrades.
“From January 2016 till I handed over power in 2017, there was no power rationing. I want to place on record that I fixed dumsor,” Mahama said.
His remarks coincide with fresh worries about the erratic electrical supply, which has irritated the people and prompted demands for a definitive response from his administration.
Opponents, especially those in the opposition, have questioned whether poor management is to blame for the current power struggles.
