Dr. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the former National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has not accepted his defeat even ten months after it occurred.
He lost his position to John Asiedu Nketia, the General Secretary at the time, in December of last year. Thwinner received 65.17% of the vote, compared to 33.81% for Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo.
Even though Mr. Nketia won handily, the former chairman claimed that the circumstances leading up to the competition still trouble him.
He claims that there were a lot of unfounded rumors about him during the competition, which he finds confusing.
Dr. Ofosu-Ampofo expressed amazement that certain party members, despite being among the party’s longest-serving members, had made up stories about him.
“How on earth could anybody think that I will be in bed with NPP? But all of a sudden my Akyem lineage was brought into question, that I am part of the Akyem mafias. I am in bed with the NPP,” he said.
He claimed that the party needed to be cleaned up in order to prevent such pointless advertising from happening again, particularly during internal elections.
“From 1992 when this party was organised we haven’t had such an acrimonious environment where press conferences are organised with accusations and insults and all those things. I have not seen it before and I still feel that we need to sanitise the campaign environment when it comes to internal elections,” Ofosu-Ampofo stated.
