Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, a member of parliament for the Volta Region’s Keta constituency, has revealed that running his campaign for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries, which were held nationwide on Saturday, May 13, 2023, cost him a staggering GH1.4 million.

The legislator claims that funding politics is difficult and expensive these days.

On Tuesday, May 16, 2023, Mr. Gakpey claimed, “It cost me GH1.4 million to run the campaign,” on Talk of the Nation on Class91.3FM monitored by Ghanatodayonline.com.

When the show’s host Klem Setumte questioned him about the source of the funds, he replied, “My own money, friends, and family.”

The economy is difficult right now, Mr. Gakpey continued, adding, “Posters are really expensive right now. Do you know how much an A0 poster costs right now? Do you know how much a T-shirt costs right now? One is GH20, one is GH25, and one is even an impression. Do you know how much petrol costs at GH45? It’s not a simple process to give teams the authority to knock on doors, and then [on election day], you have to get everyone to the polling place and figure out how to feed them.

“Politics is expensive, campaigning is expensive, but the resources are from multiple sources, honestly, that is what is happening, campaigning cost, it’s not an easy task,” the MP stated.
He continued, “I must be honest with you, politics is becoming a very expensive business now. Conveying 1,200 people to a ground to vote and feed them and all that, and then radio advert and all that, is not an easy task.”

When asked why he would choose to spend this much on becoming a legislator, Mr. Gakpey responded that it was because he wanted to save lives.
