Majority Chief Whip of Parliament Nelson-Rockson Dafeamekpor acknowledges leadership’s part in the decision and says he accepts responsibility for the chaotic events that occurred during the Appointments Committee’s meeting on January 30.

The Speaker, Alban Bagbin, formed the investigation committee after the majority and minority sides of the House clashed during the screening of ministerial nominees, causing damage to public property.

“I take responsibility, so when my punishment came, I took it in good faith,” Dafeamekpor added in reaction to the incident’s aftermath. He admitted that although there were others who disagreed with the allocation of punishment, his position on accountability did not change.

There were differences among those engaged about who should be held accountable for the disruption that occurred, Mr. Dafeamekpor said in his remarks before the special committee that was established to investigate the disturbances on February 10.

“Others disagreed that essentially if punishment were to be meted out, it ought not to be me,” “I can explain,” he said. He insisted, meanwhile, that leaders should be held accountable when mistakes are made.

When considering the unsuccessful attempts to reach an agreement that resulted in the turmoil, Dafeamekpor pointed out a significant turning point.

“Consensus building failed for that night. If my counterparts were not minded to insist on their modus operandi for that day, we wouldn’t have experienced that,” he added.

He noted that when certain people insisted on interfering with the proceedings by moving tables and chairs, it became more difficult to keep the peace.

“What can I do after they’ve chosen to cause trouble? Raise the tables and chairs. He asked, “What could I have done?” “Just to endure the penalty.”

Dafeamekpor emphasized that several aspects of the incident should have been handled more effectively as he wrapped up his remarks.

He stated, “A lot of things ought to be streamlined,” leaving open the prospect of further reforms to stop similar disruptions in the future.
