Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a flagbearer candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), is pleading with party members all over the nation to work tirelessly to restore the NDC to power in order to honor the late Jerry John Rawlings, the party’s founder.
The former governor of the Bank of Ghana said in a speech to supporters in the Central Tongu Constituency of the Volta region that the late chief of state gave his life in the service of his country and had always wanted the NDC to be in charge of its growth and change.
He informed the delegates that Mr. Rawlings had requested him to run in the 2020 presidential elections while he was still living, but he had turned down the request.
Dr. Duffuor has pleaded with the delegates not to overlook him on May 13 because he thinks the moment has come for him to lead the party he has devotedly served for decades of its existence.
Dr Kwabena Duffour stated that “It is true the late President was my friend, he liked me so much. I was in London when he (Rawlings) brought me home to join him build Ghana and since then the friendship had been so deep that every Monday morning we were eating together and quarrelling as to which direction the country’s development should go”.
“He kept warning me when I declined to lead the party but everything he told me is happening today. Today, our economy is in a mess, he warned me. So I always remember what my friend told me several times and now we have to rescue the country,” Dr Duffour said.
Dr. Duffuor promised to repair the economy and give employment to the thronging youth of Ghana if he is given the authority to head the NDC and eventually win the 2024 presidential elections.
In order to honor the late Jerry John Rawlings, he urged the members to band together and fight harder to bring the party back to power.
Starting in the Central Tongu constituency, Dr. Duffuor started his journey of the Volta region.
To wrap up day one of his visit, he is anticipated in the South and North Tongu Constituencies as well as the Akatsi South Constituency.
