Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has stated unequivocally that he will never hold the position of Minority Leader for what he claims are spiritual grounds.

Afenyo-Markin said it would be unwise and symbolic for him to hold that seat with only three weeks until the general election in December.

Afenyo-Markin asserted that holding the office of Minority Leader would be equivalent to steering his caucus into a minority in Parliament.

He clarified that he is unwilling to do this since it would have unfavorable political and spiritual ramifications. He emphasized his strong position by declaring, “I will never sit on that seat.”

The Speaker of Parliament should act to guarantee that the members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) return to their assigned places, he further stated.

Afenyo-Markin said that, particularly in view of the next elections, this will bring about order and represent the correct parliamentary structure.

As the nation nears its general election, the Majority Leader’s remarks coincide with escalating tensions and increased political sensitivity in Parliament.
