Opposition leader John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has attacked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his administration, calling it inept and clueless.
Referencing an X post from Akufo-Addo’s 2016 campaign on the exchange rate, Mahama claimed that the president was leading a government of self-centered people who lived at the expense of the general public.
“An obviously clueless, incompetent, and ‘yenkyendi’ government. The dollar is today trading above 15 GHC,” Mr. Mahama wrote.
“I promise Ghanaians, I will RESET and repair the damage to the Ghanaian economy,” the former president added.
During Ghanaian elections and campaigns, the devaluation of the cedi versus major trading currencies, particularly the dollar, and the exchange rate have always been prominent concerns.
Then-candidate Akufo-Addo blamed the 2016 situation when the cedi was trading at 3.72 cedis against the dollar on poor leadership on the part of the Mahama-led administration at the time.
“The current depreciation of the Ghana Cedi against the US dollar is because of BAD leadership. We should not be where we are today, buying dollars for 3.72. Vote for change,” Nana Addo stated in X post on May 4, 2016.
Under his direction for nearly eight years, the cedi is currently trading at above 14.8.
As a result of the present exchange rate and inflation concerns, the Akufo-Addo administration has come under heavy fire for remarks he made during his opposition.
