Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli, has declared his readiness to accept the role of running mate should it be extended by John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), according to the Asogli State Council.
According to a press release from the Council on Tuesday, February 13, the respected leader expressed this opinion when “Change Forum Makers” paid him a visit to talk about the issue.
The statement claimed that Togbe Afede XIV emphatically stated that he was ready to serve the country and that he would seize any chance to do so.
Togbe Afede XIV, however, added that Mr. Mahama is free to choose his running mate and that no one else has the right to sway or control his choice.
The Council also made it clear that Togbe Afede has not given any person or organization instructions to promote his candidacy as Mr. Mahama’s running mate.
The announcement was made in reaction to recent rumors that suggested Togbe Afede might run as John Mahama’s running mate in the 2024 presidential contest.
“A group of people who identified themselves as ‘Change Makers Forum’ were the latest to approach Togbe to consider joining President Mahama as his running mate for the 2024 Presidential election.
“Togbe responded that, as a patriotic citizen, he would not reject any opportunity to serve the country, but the choice of a running mate is the prerogative of the flagbearer who already knows him very well.”

As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer, John Mahama, continues with his “Building the Ghana We Want” campaign tour, there is jostling in the south by key party bigwigs to catch his eye for the vice-presidential slot of the party.
Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of Asogli State, is the most recent name to appear on the list of contenders. He may be the NDC’s running mate in the 2024 elections.
The most recent development occurs despite the fact that Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the former minister of education and running mate of former president John Dramani Mahama in the 2020 election, is still a strong candidate for the job.
The names of other possible contenders being tossed around include former Chief of Staff to President Mahama, Julius Debrah; an economist, Dr Nii Moi Thompson, Member of Parliament for Asunafo, Eric Opoku; and lately retired Police Commissioner, Nathan Kofi Boakye.
Mr Mahama, who is expected to announce his running mate later this month or early March, is facing intense lobbying from various power blocs within the party and interested stakeholders across the country.
But party insiders say the NDC flag bearer will most likely stick to the choice of Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, a native of the Central Region, which has proven a decisive area in presidential elections.
