Prior to the New Patriotic Party’s(NPP) parliamentary primaries, Mr. Alfred Obeng-Boateng, the representative for Bibiani Anhwiaso Constituency, declares his financial prowess in a recent tape that has gained traction on social media.
Former Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) CEO urges rivals to financially adequately position themselves if they intend to topple him.
Mr. Obeng-Boateng, who serves as vice chair of the government assurance committee in parliament, promises to double any donation any candidate makes to NPP delegates and emphasizes that the money for the primaries is safe in dollar accounts.
“I am telling you that the money I will use for the primaries is in dollars and that money has been secured long ago, I must be frank with you. That is money I am not touching under any circumstance”.
“So, I laugh seeing all that they are doing, I have dollars there for that primaries. What I can tell my delegates is that I will pay more than double what anyone who will contest me will offer them, they should take that from me. If they come together and decide to pay GHC10,000 per delegate I will pay more than that”, he said.
“Whatever they pay, even if they pay GHC20,000 I will pay more than GHC20,000 because I know how much I have put there; I know how much I have reserved. That is why I saved in dollars so that the money will not lose value,” he noted.
In a later video, he defends his comments, pointing out that there is no legal restriction on preserving large sums, and insisting that his position is a reaction to perceived financial threats from rival businesses.
“I have not kept my money in the house just because I say I have kept my money in dollars. It simply implies that I have exchanged some of my money for dollars, whether it was at the bank or in my room. There is no crime or infraction involved in it. Nothing is wrong with that. Where I want to keep my money is up to me.
“If I also said that in the upcoming primaries, whatever my competitors will, I will offer more than them, they should know that I was responding to a threat from someone saying that he was going to pay money, who was he going to pay to and for what reason. So that is why I said I will pay more than them because if someone threatens, I have to be able to threaten the person back”.
Mr Alfred Obeng defeated the incumbent MP who doubles as the Western North Regional Minister Kingsley Aboagye Gyedu in the 2020 NPP Parliamentary primaries.
Mr Obeng won the primaries by 580 votes as against his contender and incumbent MP who had 188 votes with 17 absentee delegates.
The first list of candidates included of Christopher Addae (former MP 2000–2008), Alfred Obeng Boateng (former BOST MD and CEO of Approachers Series), and Kingsley Aboage-Gyedu (the incumbent Member of Parliament and Regional Minister).
Unexpectedly, Christopher Addae withdrew from the race and backed Mr. Obeng Boateng.
He promised to advance the party in the district and expressed his deep gratitude and appreciation to delegates who supported him.
