The President of the Republic of Ghana John Dramani Mahama has has reiterated his commitment to preserving Ghana’s judicial independence.

President Mahama emphasized the significance of upholding a delicate balance of power among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches during Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie’s swearing-in ceremony as Chief Justice on Monday, November 17, 2025, at Jubilee House in Accra.

He pointed out that while each arm of government must function independently, they also need to work together for the benefit of all.

“The strength of our democracy depends on the delicate yet essential balance of powers among the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary. Today as President, I pledge my unwavering commitment to the independence of the judiciary,” he stated.

President Mahama emphasized that judicial independence is a constitutional protection rather than a failure of the courts. He urged the preservation of the financial, institutional, and administrative independence of the courts and stated that, as the cornerstone of the rule of law, court rulings, regardless of their popularity, must be upheld.

Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will continue to carry out the judiciary’s constitutional role without fear or favor, the President said, expressing confidence in his leadership.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie promised to uphold judicial independence and the Constitution during his swearing-in ceremony on Monday, November 17.

He further stated that he will uphold a strong emphasis on responsibility, respect each judge’s independence, and make sure the judiciary is free from undue influence.

“Mr. President, in accepting this office, I give my solemn word that I will uphold the rule of law,” the Chief Justice pledged. Respect the Constitution and the division of powers. I’ll uphold each judge’s independence and make sure there is no inappropriate influence on the judiciary. I’ll also want accountability.

As Chief Justice, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is now fully responsible for overseeing Ghana’s judiciary and maintaining its integrity.
