President Akufo-Addo has refuted Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin’s assertion that he is a lame-duck president.
Following the election of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s leader and presidential candidate, the Speaker of Parliament stated a few weeks ago that President Akufo-Addo was losing the support of certain influential NPP figures, including members of Parliament.
Speaking to the leaders and residents of Nima, an Accra suburb, on Sunday, December 17, 2023, at a ceremony honoring Nima Chief Nii Futa’s 20th anniversary, President Akufo-Addo urged those in attendance to ignore Mr. Bagbin’s claim.
The President declared that he will continue to lead the Republic until January 7, 2025. He will continue to use his official authority and make choices that will ensure the prosperity of the country up until that point.
“Speaker Bagbin says I am a lame duck. Well, that is his language. I am still the president of the republic and I will continue to do so until January 7, 2025.
“I have no doubt that the power to make decisions and carry out policies is still firmly in my hands, and I am not going to let it go.
“So I don’t know what he is talking about when he says I am a lame-duck president. I am not a lame-duck president,” President Akufo-Addo stated.
President Akufo-Addo responded to the chief of Nima’s observation that there aren’t many Zongo people holding prominent positions in government by saying that both the Zongo community and the general public have been given excellent opportunities to cast ballots and choose Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and NPP’s presidential candidate, to be the nation’s next leader.
Samira Bawumia, his wife, a Zongo girl, will automatically become the first lady upon his election to the presidency, making her the first “Zongo girl” to hold that esteemed position.
