In a speech to the public on January 7, Constitution Day, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo claimed that his chief rival, John Dramani Mahama, had still not congratulated him on winning the 2020 election, three years after his victory.

“On a lighter note. three (3) years on, I am still waiting for my main opponent in the 2020 elections to congratulate me on my victory,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“I swore an oath on 7th January 2017 and, again, four (4) years later, on 7th January 2021, to be faithful and true to the Republic of Ghana, and preserve, protect and defend the Constitution. I shall continue to do just that”.

“It will not be under my watch that any adventurer will seek to torpedo the democratic path on which we are embarked. I will help see to it that we have a free, fair and transparent election in December 2024. You have my word! Ghana will be the victor of such an outcome, not any individual party or candidate” the president added.

In order to contest the legitimacy of the election results from December 7, the former president, who was the NDC’s 2020 presidential candidate, dragged President Akufo-Addo and the Electoral Commission (EC) to court.

“One of the worst organized elections in this country since 1992,” was his assessment of the 2020 contest.

Mr. Mahama, who was hoping to win in 2020 after losing the 2016 election, prayed to the Supreme Court to overturn the results and force a rerun between himself and Akufo-Addo.

On March 4, 2021, a seven-member panel of Supreme Court judges unanimously dismissed the election petition following three months of proceedings.

According to former Chief Justice Anin Yeboah, the petitioner did not address each of the five issues the court raised in order to determine the case.
