The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has urged the government to stop plans for the establishment of five new universities and instead direct resources to improve the existing ones.

While UTAG acknowledged the importance of increasing access to higher education, it emphasized that the current public universities are severely underfunded, struggling with significant infrastructural deficits, and suffering from subpar working conditions for their staff.

They suggested that funds be set aside by the government to enhance conditions in the current public universities.

This involves building new facilities, improving lecturers’ working conditions, hiring more academic staff, funding research, and making up subvention payments that the government hasn’t made, which affects all public universities.

This UTAG recommendation came out of their 21st Biennial National Congress, which took place from October 11–October 13, 2023, at the University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale.

The paucity of initial funding for the creation of new institutions in recent years, including UniMAC, CKT-UTAS, SDD-UBIDS, AAMUSTED, and UESD, was also brought up by the congress.

To guarantee a favorable teaching and learning environment for their members and students, UTAG urged the government to concentrate on providing seed financing for these universities.
