“In the digital age, safeguarding your identity is crucial,” MTN’s Chief Information Officer, Mr. Bernard Acquah advises customers.

On Monday, MTN Ghana, one of the leading telecom companies, held a cybersecurity awareness seminar at its Ridge headquarters in Accra.

The workshop, with the theme “Living with Security,” emphasized MTN’s continuous dedication to a secure digital environment while teaching journalists safe digital navigation techniques.

Prominent cybersecurity speakers were present at the gathering, including Mr. Bernard Acquah, Chief Information Officer of MTN, who presented ideas from his extensive IT background. Mr. Koby Spiky Nkrumah, the CEO of CTRIL IT and an EIB digital specialist, moderated the session.

The speakers explored the necessity of proactive digital habits and the realities of everyday cybersecurity risks.

Mr. Acquah emphasized basic yet efficient safety precautions, such as protecting personal data, updating devices often to prevent cyberattacks, and shutting off WiFi and Bluetooth when not in use.

He cautioned people about phony reward announcements or unwanted messages. He pointed out that “you can’t win a lottery you haven’t entered,” supporting his argument with relatable examples.

Teaching the next generation was one of the main topics of discussion. In order to foster early understanding of cybersecurity hazards, Mr. Acquah counseled parents to take the initiative to supervise their kids’ online activity.

He encouraged responsible use of AI, framing it as a tool for learning rather than potential misuse.

Additionally, Mr. Acquah cautioned organizations and companies against phishing schemes, in which criminals send emails or websites that look authentic but are actually designed to steal personal data. In order to protect themselves, he suggested that they be wary of emails or messages that look too good to be true, check email addresses or linger over links to confirm the sender’s address, and refrain from acting hastily in response to urgent or alluring communications.
