Following up on his lackluster performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Ghanaian striker Inaki Williams made a significant contribution to Athletic Bilbao’s Copa del Rey quarterfinal victory over Barcelona on Wednesday night.
Despite Ghana’s early elimination from the Ivory Coast tournament, Williams moved on from his problems fast. He took a private jet from the Black Stars hotel and landed in Spain early on Wednesday, just in time for the big match.
Williams, who started the game on the bench, had a significant impact after replacing Adu Ares in the 59th minute of the second half.
His efforts saw Athletic Bilbao win 4-2 thanks to a goal in the 105th minute of extra time and an assist to his younger brother, Nico Williams.
Athletic Club also had goals from Gorka Guruzeta and Oihan Sancet, while Barcelona’s consolation goals came from Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal.
This season, Williams has scored ten goals across all competitions.
According to the player, it is refreshing to enjoy football again after the shambolic performance of the Black Stars in the ongoing African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
The 29-year-old was instrumental in a thrilling quarterfinal match, helping to set up two goals as Bilbao defeated Barcelona 4-2 in extra time, eliminating the latter from the competition.
In a post on X, Inaki Williams said “I came back for a reason”.
Willaims scored and assisted in the 4-2 victory, even though it was less than 48 hours from the time he left Ghana’s Ivory Coast camp to the game.
It wasn’t until Tuesday that Williams took a private jet back to Spain following Ghana’s elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The forward for Athletic Bilbao started just one game for the Black Stars in the Ivory Coast, where they were unable to win any of their three group matches against Mozambique, Egypt, and Cape Verde.
