Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak, the Interior Minister, has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to move all district, divisional, and regional police commanders based in mining areas immediately.

The minister claims that the decision is intended to replace police officers who have worked in certain regions for a long time without successfully combating illicit mining operations.

He underlined that this order is a component of strict efforts to combat the threat.

Affected commanders will be moved to regions where there is no mining activity under the new policy, and their successors will either be transferred or given a three-month probationary period to demonstrate their ability to stop illicit mining.

Speaking to Imams and Zongo Chiefs in Kumasi, Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak reiterated his resolve to carry out this order in spite of growing pressure on the IGP to change its mind.

“I have ordered the IGP to transfer all police commanders in all mining areas and send in new ones. So if you are a regional, divisional, and district police commander serving in mining areas, you will be changed with immediate effect.

“The new ones we are taking there will be transferred after three months if they don’t perform. We will keep making changes till we see results,” Muntaka said.

The decree demonstrates the government’s determination to bolster law enforcement in the battle against illicit mining, which still poses a serious risk to Ghana’s water resources and environment.
