Tensions erupted at the old Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters in Ridge, Greater Accra, earlier today, disrupting the re-collation of the Ablekuma North Constituency’s parliamentary election results.
The process was once again suspended as National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters disrupted the proceedings by breaking glass louvers.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had been at odds over the collation process, which was finally resumed at 8 a.m. after several delays. These disagreements are the result of disputed results at three of the 281 polling stations in the constituency.
Tensions surrounding the authenticity of pink sheets increased after Vincent Obeng, the EC’s Returning Officer, resigned on January 8.
Mr. Obeng had previously stated that the results from 278 polling stations had been confirmed, making the collation nearly finished. But so far, the procedure has been suspended six times due to differences about the results from the final three polling stations.
With officials from the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn and the NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriye present at the collation center, it was anticipated that today’s session would settle the standoff. However, as NDC supporters voiced their displeasure with the procedure, tense disputes amongst party agents turned chaotic. According to witnesses, the crowd got out of control and caused property damage, including the EC office’s glass louvres.
The final result is anticipated to be determined by the results of the three controversial polling stations in the Ablekuma North parliamentary election, which is still one of the most hotly contested in the Greater Accra Region. Now, the electorate in the constituency awaits additional EC announcements regarding the start of the collation process.
