Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has denied being the architect of the audio that was purportedly of senior police officers plotting to have him removed from office.
On September 12, 2023, Dr. Dampare stated during a public hearing by a special committee of parliament on the leaked tape that the accusations made against him by the two police officers who were on it, COP George Alex Mensah and Superintendent George L Asare, are merely fabrications.
“My brothers we were given the opportunity to come and speak (of the leaked tape) and made the indication that they are involved and all of a sudden instead of them focusing on that, they come out with wild allegations.
“Wild allegations that touch my person, the police leadership that I lead and the entire police service without a shred of evidence,” he said.
When Samuel Atta Akyea, the chairman of the committee, questioned Dr. Dampare about whether he helped Burgi Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), record the recording, Dr. Dampare responded, “Honorable chair, that is not true.”
The two police officers who were on the recording, COP George Alex Mensah and Superintendent George L. Asare, made outrageous accusations against the IGP, leading the committee to call him.
They assert that the IGP helped Burgi Naabu, the NPP’s Northern Regional Chairman, to secretly film the video.
They also questioned Dr. Dampare’s leadership style as IGP.
