Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has cautioned Ghanaians about the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 motto, “It is possible,” asserting that the ruling party is unable to fulfill its commitments.
Speaking in Accra to a group of female media professionals, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang criticized the NPP’s record, pointing to recent occurrences as proof of their failure to keep their promises.
She notably mentioned the pensioner bondholders’ picketing at the Finance Ministry, where they were demanding the return of their funds.
When making election judgments, she advised Ghanaians to carefully examine the promises made by the NPP and take into account the reality of their fulfillment.
“At a time of different haircuts, and at a time old people picketing at the ministry of finance…at that time they also thought that none of this will happen, they didn’t even imagine that it is possible. But that has been possible, so when you hear about it is possible, think about it. It is possible to picket at the Ministry of Finance, it’s possible to have a different style or haircut,” she said.
She vehemently refuted claims that, should it win elections, the NDC has the ideas and vision necessary to lead effectively.
“When we say it is a people’s manifesto, we mean it, I keep saying that you can just shut a couple of us in a room for a couple of weeks and we can draft one for you nicely. But for who are you doing the manifesto for? Does it include journalists? Yes, it includes journalists of many areas of focus.
“But what about the women? What is worrying them that we have to know? And if you don’t talk to them as a group, how will you know? It’s not that you lack ideas, no, those are childish. We’re a serious party. That is why we’re engaging all of you,” he said.
She emphasized how important her years of expertise and insight have been to her position and the country.
“Let everybody understand that I’m very proud of every minute God has given me and if he gives me more, I’ll be more grateful. But my life is in His hands not anybody’s hands. I don’t consider my age as a nuisance, I consider it as a blessing, so that is it.
“What else is there to say? Is that all they could say? Did they also say that I was corrupt? Why couldn’t they say that I was insulting people?”
“You see, a lot of these things we must see as unnecessary and unuseful distractions. Is that all they can say? They should find other forms. What about their own selves? I never said I was an angel but I don’t think I’ve killed anybody’s child.
“So I’m happy with myself, I’m proud of how far God has brought me and I believe God will take everybody much further.”
