The NDC presidential candidate John Mahama’s running mate for 2020, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has taken issue with President Akufo-Addo’s comments regarding the lack of progress in the Central Region’s Ekumfi.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang accused the president of a pattern of consistently attributing his failures to people who did not vote for him in a statement posted on X, the former name of Twitter.

Ekumfi was left out of national development initiatives, according to President Akufo-Addo, because voters rejected NPP parliamentary candidate Ato Cudjoe in the 2020 elections.

The public and political analysts widely condemned this revelation, which was made at a meeting with traditional leaders from Ekumfi at the Jubilee House.

President Nana Akufo-Addo “has been consistent in blaming his failures and woes on those who he claims do not vote for him”, former President John Mahama’s 2020 running mate Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has said in response to Mr Akufo-Addo’s honest confession recently that he deliberately deprived Ekumfi of development because the people voted out his preferred candidate Francis Ato Cudjoe from parliament.

According to President Akufo-Addo, the people of Ekumfi chose to remove Francis Ato Cudjoe from Parliament in the 2020 elections, which caused his government to gloss over development in the area.

In a meeting with traditional leaders from the constituency at the Jubilee House, the president voiced his displeasure with the voting pattern in Ekumfi.

Even though he appointed Ato Cudjoe as the Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture in order to spur development in the constituency, President Akufo-Addo claimed that he was not happy with the voters’ decision to remove Cudjoe from office.

I have to be honest with you; I did not pay attention to developments in your area when Ato Cudjoe, your MP, was promoted to deputy minister by me after you voted him out in the most recent elections. However, now that you have brought it up, I will.

The president was visited by traditional leaders who begged him for more development to raise the standard of living for their people.

Even though Abeiku Crentsil lost the 2016 parliamentary election, he came back in 2020 and defeated Francis Ato Cudjoe.

Following their appeal, President Akufo-Addo gave them the assurance that, in spite of his disappointment, he would make every effort to develop the area.

But in a sharp rebuttal on X, Prof Opoku-Agyemang said such responses have been trendy excuses for the president.

Read Prof Opoku-Agyemang’s full statement below:

Mr. President, please do something, say something different before you go.

But come to think of it, our president has been consistent in blaming his failures and woes on those who he claims do not vote for him.

No one has forgotten his response to Torgbui Adzonu-Gaga Amenya Fiti V, the Paramount Chief from Aflao, about the need to complete one of our e-blocks to pre-empt unnecessary stress.

Many remember a similar reaction in response to the displaced and traumatised people of the flooded areas in the Volta Region.

He simply repeated same to the usurpers from Ekumfi as described by the family of our late President, who were granted audience on a matter that is clearly none of their business.

The paradox is very tangible; the people of the Ashanti Region constantly complaining of neglect.  Does his party not gain the majority of their votes from the region? Maybe they don’t vote and in the consistency expressed, are deserving of his neglect.

This reaction makes one wonder where the “massive votes” actually come from.

Many of us await the response of our president to his ‘stronghold’. Maybe he will repeat his response to Torgbui Adzonu-Gaga Amenya Fiti V. Or to the good people of Kwabre, again. But, let’s wait.

Maybe we will hear a response different from the one he directed to the people of Kwabre that it’s none of his business if they vote for the NDC. I believe the good people from Kwabre have heard the president whose party they swear to have consistently voted for, loud and clear.

Indeed, he went on to explain to the good people of Kwabre that he is not expected to hold their thumbs down the ballot papers.

The NDC welcomes the votes of all people in the country, regardless.

We are happy to collaborate with everyone who desires to restore our country onto itself by joining all our efforts in building the Ghana we all want, led by our experienced, respectful and humble, flag bearer, HE John Dramani Mahama, whose record speaks for itself.
