Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), has sued Lawyer Kwame Adofo for slander, requesting GHC2 million in damages.
The complaint was filed at the high court on Monday, May 27, and it accuses Adofo of making false and defamatory statements that have damaged Prof. Addai-Mensah’s reputation.
The plaintiff claims in the lawsuit that the remarks in question, which were made in public, seriously damaged her reputation both personally and professionally.
Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah is requesting GHC5 million in damages from Adofo, which up until December 2023 supplied legal services for the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), as well as an apology and retraction.
“Plaintiff says that the post by the defendant on his Facebook wall has created a great dent in the plaintiff’s hard-earned reputation and he has even had to be called by the King of the Asante on the issue”, parts of the suit stated.
“Plaintiff says the false and reckless statements made by defendant continues to lower his esteem in the face of right-thinking Ghanaians and his integrity in the academia have been grossly affected”
The change in events comes after attorney Adofo petitioned President Akufo-Addo to remove Professor Addai Mensah from his position.
Attorney Adofo alleges that the hospital’s CEO is the subject of considerable evidence of financial mismanagement and ineptitude.
Adofo accused Professor Addai Mensah in a previous interview with Asaase News of misappropriating GHC300,000, which is still unaccounted for, and of violating procurement procedures.
Adofo claims that these accusations raise grave questions about the management, skill, and integrity of the CEO.
Attorney Adofo said “My petition was written to the president because he is the appointing authority”.
“I made specific allegations against the said chief executive officer [of KATH] because I have evidence to firmly back the claims. The first allegation concerns GHC300,000 in cash that the CEO has not been able to account for. And as a concerned citizen, I petitioned the president because he said we should not sit idle when we see people committing offences.”
However, the hospital vigorously defended its CEO, calling the accusations baseless and replete with errors. The hospital’s labour unions have also issued a warning against trying to remove the CEO.
